Course Overview
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to safely operate quad bikes including undertaking pre-start checks and shut down procedures.

The unit applies to individuals who operate quad bikes to undertake routine work under general supervision with limited autonomy and accountability.

Vehicles must be operated according to relevant state/territory licensing authority vehicle licence requirements and regulations.

Course Details

This unit of competency is designed for participants wanting to develop their knowledge and skills in maintaining and operating quad bikes (four wheeled).

It includes:

  • Performing routine pre-operational checks and maintenance;
  • Matching, attaching and operating equipment as described in the manufacturer's operators manual;
  • Recognising and controlling hazards and risks;
  • Safely operating quad bikes in a range of weather and terrain conditions and monitoring
  • and maintaining vehicle records.

This unit applies to workers in the agriculture, horticulture and conservation and land management sectors who use quad bikes as part of their daily work routines or any individual for recreational purposes.

Course Duration This unit is delivered face-to-face using a combination of theory and practical activities at the client's private property or workplace over 1-2 days, depending on prior experience.

  • Use of Gear Ranges, Diff Locks/4WD (where applicable)
  • Turning (Gradual/Quick)
  • Braking Techniques/Emergency Stop
  • Swerving
  • Riding Over Obstacles
  • Hills (Ascend/Descend/Traverse/Recovery)
  • Difficult Terrain
  • Carrying loads & towing trailers
  • Safe procedures for load/unloading from vehicles & trailers
  • Environmental issues
  • Assessment of terrain for vehicle suitability
Course Assessments Assessment of this unit is a combination of observation, a written test and practical demonstration of skills and knowledge in the context of the work environment after training has been delivered. The trainer will let participants know after assessment whether they have successfully completed the unit, and provide guidance/advice if additional training is required.

Resources All States Training will provide participants with learning materials & assessment documentation. It is preferred however, that participants supply their own quad bike, helmet, safety gloves and eye protection.

Participants are also required to wear appropriate protective clothing and footwear which includes steel capped boots, long sleeve shirt and pants.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Participants can apply for RPL in regard to skills and knowledge which will be considered on an individual basis however formal assessment will still be required.
